Was reading about Better Off Dead from this website I found through IMDB.com. It's an interview with the gentleman who played "Ricky" [pic above] & Savage Steve Holland. Nice to know they are pals and work together doing a dozen or so Nickelodeon kid shows.
It was great reading about Better Off Dead. Didn't know it was semi-biographical, about Savage Steve. That the heatrbreak over the ex-girlfriend was a true story. And so was "my two dollars" paperboy!
I still remember seeing his movies in the theater. One of the best teen comedies of the '80's because they were smart and funny, and a little twisted. They had an edge to them. Too bad the John Hughes movies took over that teen flick genre.
But what's really disappointing is John Cusack. I've heard 'he's an asshole" stories about him before but anybody who's somebody in L.A. is an asshole really. But jeez, Cusack you were an asshole before you were famous.
I don't get it. How big is that stick up your ass? You didn't find Savage Steve's movies funny?
I still like Cusack but damn. What a lameo. I like the fact that people still come up to him with "where's my two dollars" and it annoys him.
At least Matthew Broderick can joke about the crap he gets when people rag on him for Godzilla

I had no idea that "Better off Dead" was semi-autobiographical . thanks for sharing that interesting stuff about a movie I remember very fondly .. I still like Cusack, but in some of his movies now you can tell he is just phoning it in

Wow...those interviews are great. So weird about Cusack, he seems like a pretty smart dude, so how is it that he could go through the whole process of making the flick and then say that he had no idea how absurd the whole thing supposedly was? And how can he be such a great comic actor and then think that BOD's not funny?
I really don't get that. But reading those interviews makes me want to watch the movie again.

Yeah I still like Cusack, but I hate to think that One Crazy Summer might have suffered because of their fallout. OCS is not as good as BOD, but it still has some nice gags running throughout the movie. The little girl who gets sweet revenge on people who insult her ugly dog.
"And how can he be such a great comic actor and then think that BOD's not funny?"
I know. He co-wrote Gross Pointe Blank!

Savage Steve actually sounds like a pretty likeable kind of guy. It's too bad that he never bothered to come into the studio when I was working on Sabrina. I guess maybe even HE had a hard time actually admitting a connection with DiC, huh?
Oh well. I never let snobbish pretensions or general asshole-ery get in the way of making a paycheck did I?

I love that hamburger scene with Van Halen's "Everybody Wants Some!"
